Abstract

Powder metallurgy is an unique technique for the manufacture of near net shape components with desired mechanical and metallurgical properties. Workability is a process of shaping the material thro plastic deformation without cracks. The ductile fracture of the components in any metal working processes is common. Workability is the concept with difficult to define in a confined way and it depends on the ductility of the material and the details of the process parameters. An investigation has been made for the prediction of the workability behavior of Al-SiC composites under various stress sate conditions namely the uniaxial, the plane and the triaxial stress state conditions. Cold upsetting tests on aluminium with various percent content of Silicon carbide metal matrix composite have been conducted and the workability behavior of the aforesaid MMC has been investigated. The phenomenon like axial strain, various stresses, and the formability stress index (b) under different stress state conditions were systematically analyzed considering the bulging effects.
